When I was a kid I dreamed of being an architect, a rock star and a superhero. I started working in architecture offices when I turned 13 and after graduating from Beach High (no joke) in Miami Beach, I attended Rice University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts (Art, Art History and Architecture) in 1992 and a BArch in 1999. The 5 glorious years in between were spent rocking the Live Music Capital of the world, touring the country in a 1981 Ford Econoline van, playing 4 official SXSW showcases, and winning the Austin Chronicle Music Award for Best Pop Band in 1993-1994.
I started Weiss Architecture in 2003 and received a Master’s from the University of Texas in Community and Regional Panning in 2004. My design philosophy is simple. Architecture is about problem solving. Find the essence of every problem and provide a solution that is functional (heavy on the fun), creative, and unique. This same philosophy applies to our clients. Each client is unique and deserves an architectural solution that captures and enhances their brand, goals, and life.
I am active in civic policy, having served on the City of Austin Design Commission (2001-2011) and the City of Austin Downtown Commission (2009-2011). I am also active in the Austin Chapter American Institute of Architects, serving on the Board since 2009 and as Board President in 2012. I was the recipient of the AIA Young Architect Award in 2009 and continue to take an active role in civic pursuits.
I have an awesome wife and 2 spectacular daughters, which are the true joy of my life. After a 17-year hiatus, I started playing music again in 2014, fronting a Hedwig and the Angry Inch tribute band called the Sideways Grimace. I also play with Recovering, a group of musicians that compiled a list of our favorite records and play a different album at each performance. So I am currently an architect by day and a costume wearing musical vigilante at night…it turns out dreams do come true.
Laura is a native Texan that grew up in Austin. Her fascination with design and construction documents can be traced back to her grandfather’s drafting table. After graduating from the University of Texas with a Bachelor of Architecture in 2003, Laura worked at architectural firms that honed her skills at providing innovative and sensitive design solutions rooted in the craft of construction.
In 2012, Laura joined Weiss Architecture and her experience within the firm actively engages projects across a variety of scales: from large cinemas to custom furniture and everything in between. Her strong organizational skills, sharp design chops and sense of humor highlight her ability to create great design at any price point.
When not scouring local thrift stores for Russel Wright dinnerware, Laura enjoys good food, laughter, movies, rock and roll, and spending time with her husband, daughter, two dogs and one cat.
Born and raised in Amsterdam NL, Rouke was inspired by the style of the Amsterdam School to study architecture. He received his Bachelors and Masters degree in Architecture from the University of Delft and spent a semester studying abroad at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
In the Netherlands, Rouke worked for both large and small firms where he designed high-end residential and commercial projects with a focus on green building.
In 2013 he moved to Austin, bought a bike, got married, joined a band, and began working for Weiss Architecture. At Weiss he has been a designer and project manager for several restaurants and office buildings.
In his spare time, Rouke enjoys the benefits of Austin, including playing music, hiking the greenbelt, catching a show, and riding his bike.
